These may not have been your childhood dream jobs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a life doing them.
What do you do for a living?
There are many more vocations held by the nearly 128 million full-time employees in the United States than the traditional jobs that spring to mind. If you’ve ever seen the show Dirty Professions with Mike Rowe, you’re probably aware of the existence of a plethora of odd jobs that fall far outside of your standard nine-to-five.
Even if many of these occupations are strange and unusual, it doesn’t mean they aren’t decent, respectable employment. Many of these strange careers have yearly incomes that you wouldn’t be embarrassed to disclose. They’re simply…different. And, like any other employment, they each have their own set of benefits and drawbacks.
However, if you’re searching for something a little unusual that also pays shockingly well, look no further.
How did we end up with these high-paying odd jobs?
What is considered a good income in the United States is highly dependent on where you live. However, in order to define “a job that pays shockingly well,” we looked at incomes that would place the worker in what the Pew Research Center classifies as “middle class.”
According to the Pew Research Center, the “middle class” is defined as having an income that is two-thirds to double the national median, which was $69,560 in 2020. As a result, the middle range for a three-person household would cost between $46,000 to $140,000. This range is covered by the occupations on this list.
We obtained compensation statistics for each position from a variety of credible salary sources. We examined the pay ranges for each position and calculated an average salary range to provide you with a clearer understanding of the possible remuneration for each vocation.
Finally, when it comes to how we define “weird,” we picked occupations that you may not be aware exist or that would be unusual for a youngster to indicate an interest in pursuing when they grow up. Let me add that I have nothing against any of these occupations. They just aren’t going to be the first job that springs to mind when deciding on a career.
With that in mind, here are 15 odd careers that also pay oddly well.
